Journal #17: Gender Roles

In today’s society there is much less emphasis on the gender roles. Women have been fighting for equal rights with men; it’s always been a constant battle for women to be able to do the same thing as men can do. But are they equal now? Are women surpassing the ability of men? Or are men still the ahead of women?

Throughout the 1900s, “men… served as the sole breadwinners for the family….” Men would work as doctors and lawyer and their wife’s would stay at home or have a job as a secretary or another stereotypical female profession. But just in that small period between then and now many things have changed. I feel that in today’s society it is much easier to be a woman than a man. Women have been pursing more careers outside of the house and “more men have expressed a desire to take on the role of primary caregiver to the children,” which isn’t easy for the men. They have had to deal with no longer being the sole wage earner for the family.

Women are having an easier time making their way into a “male type” job, such as a doctor or a lawyer. Although many women are breaking into these types of jobs , men still remain rare in the stereotypically women jobs.

Men feel as if they “are stuck”. Although working mothers have became ordinary in households, only 1% of married couples that have a child under the age of 15 have stay at home dads. If you are a male or a female many feel that “masculinity is valued more than femininity”. Meaning that either sex would much rather be looked at for how much masculinity they have in them compared to how much femininity they have in them.
